Independence Day
Miss Independent and her brother hope you had a fantastic Fourth!
We were supposed to go to the Riley's bay house for the weekend but had to cancel at the last minute because of some pretty bad storms. Luckily we were still able to find lots of fun things to do in Austin and we still got to spend the day with the Rileys! First, we joined the Allandale parade.
Wonder Woman, dogs dressed like hot dogs? I love our neighborhood.

This was actually our attempt at a group shot of the kids. Utterly unsuccessful.

Later we headed downtown, ate some hot dogs at Frank and went to Auditorium Shores to listen to the symphony and watch fireworks. Grammie and Emily were with us too!
Apparently Emmylou doesn't own anything non-pink so red, white and blue was out of the question.

Oh, the hideousness...
Miller is 22 months old
Dear Miller,
Congratulations, buddy, you're talking! Finally. Not that you're really late, but you've been getting so frustrated lately so I know it's a huge relief for you. No longer do you only say "yep" or "o-tay," you can now put words together to really get your point across. You even started saying "Emmy" a couple of weeks ago and you especially like to call for her while running down the hall. I have to admit I'm already a little sad I won't hear much of your classic one-word exchanges anymore, because you had all of us cracking up at some of them. For example, because you are still a complete sugar fiend (unbelievably) more than your mommy or sister (or maybe both combined), you used to demand "CANDY!" Except I wouldn't understand (because it sounded like "duhdee") so I'd say, "what?" Then you'd repeat (demanding, again), "CANDY!" Once I would understand and say, "Candy? You want candy?" you'd immediately respond with the most nonchalant "o-tay" like it was all my idea in the first place. This happened at least twice a day for a good month or more and I think we laughed every time.
Speaking of candy, you are also finally eating a little better. You're still a self-imposed vegetarian (but certainly not vegan considering your continued love affair with all things dairy) and rather than eating nothing but Cliff kids protein bars all day, you now usually eat a few bites of a few different things on your plate. Like grapes and macaroni and cheese. You still love beans and rice and you almost always eat guacamole now at Mexican restaurants. Hooray for liking a superfood! Sadly, your favorite thing in the entire world might be Diet Coke which makes me feel like a terrible, terrible mother. The fact that you even know what it tastes like is ridiculous, but you can really throw a fit in a restaurant and what can I say, I'm weak when it comes to you guys making a scene in a public place. I'm hoping it won't cause any (serious?) permanent damage.
Right now you are loving Woody, Buzz and all things Toy Story. We took you to see Toy Story 3 in the theater a couple of weeks ago and you almost made it through the entire thing. You also still love reading books and can't get enough of anything with a wheel (and especially crashing anything with a wheel). It really is uncanny how you are immediately attracted to anything related to transportation and you can already point to the engine, spoiler, bumpers, wheels, etc. on your toy cars.
You love your daddy and couldn't be more thrilled with the Cars pajamas he bought you at Target the other day. You are already very particular about what you want to wear and will flat out refuse one t-shirt over another or throw a fit when I try to take off those beloved Cars jammies or your favorite airplane PJs in the morning. Oh, you're also obsessed with shoes. Uh-oh.
Are you, perhaps, seeing a pattern about "throwing fits?" Um, yeah, you have a little temper. Just like your daddy. Your personality is still different from your sister's. She was always friendly and bubbly to anyone and you're a little more reserved. You're more likely to say "hi" or "bye bye" to an overhead helicopter than someone who's oohing and aahing over you in a restaurant or store.
But you're a super snuggler. And always generous with hugs and kisses for your family. You can't get enough of your daddy right now but I think you'll always be your mommy's boy (Daddy thinks I baby you a little too much so I'm trying to let go a little). Don't tell him I said so, but I'd be fine with that forever.
I love you more than anything, Miller!!
Love,
Mommy

PHOTO SHOOT!
Emily met us out at Mayfield Park a few weeks ago so we could take some family photos. She never ceases to amaze me with how great her photos turn out! At the end of each shoot I'm always positive that my crazy, uncooperative kids have wasted her time and that we haven't gotten anything good. Needless to say, I was thrilled with the shots from this shoot. Emily suggested we bring a few props and I think they worked really well. Since I'm so bad about posting these days, I'm going to just load this post up with tons of pictures. Enjoy or scroll through quickly, whichever you prefer. :)

And this one perfectly captures how Emmylou feels when Miller gets any attention whatsoever:
Emily, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You are amazing.

Father's Day 2010
After weeks of excruciating waiting, Emmylou finally got to give Gary the mug she made for him at Cafe Monet. He was so excited opening it!

It's in the blood

Instead of a kid's meal, Emmylou decided to order a cup of shrimp gumbo for her dinner at Pappadeaux tonight (inspired by Tiana from The Princess and the Frog). We went ahead and ordered some corn dog bites and fries for Miller but that was pointless. They both downed the gumbo in record time!

Recital Rundown, Part 1
Although I hope to be posting some video of Emmylou's ballet recital soon (because the hilarity of it is really not to be missed), I thought I'd go ahead and post a few photos I took today.
In fact, let's play a game, shall we? Even though you can't see their faces, can you guess which one is Emmylou?

As if I need proof that she dances to the beat of a different drum. :)
Emmylou, you were the most original ladybug up there! We loved watching you!

Emmylou is 4! (ahem, 3 months ago)
Dear Emmylou,
It's been forever since I've written you a letter! I can't believe it, but I don't think I've written you one since you've turned 4. I apologize, but I must say that you (and your brother) really are keeping me that busy.
I hardly know where to begin. I think I've been afraid to admit that there is no longer a bit of you that's a toddler or baby. You are only little girl these days, and sometimes not so little. You keep asking me how long it'll take for you to become a grown-up! Thankfully you usually agree when I ask you to slow down.
Speaking of slowing down life, the circle of life was recently opened up to you by a friend who told you "when you get really, really old, you're gonna die!" When you told me this in the car, I tried to make light of it by smiling and replying, "they did?!" But instead of dropping the topic, you immediately and desperately shouted, "Mommy! When I get really, really old am I gonna die?!" I couldn't lie to you. I said, "well, Sweetie, yes. We all will die one day, it's just what happens." You cried for a bit and then stopped when we talked about the fact that it's probably a really long way away, but then you got upset again when you asked me if we'd die together and I said probably not, that I'd go first. I felt bad telling you that because I didn't want you to think I was leaving you all alone, but it turned out that what you were most worried about was how you'd get to heaven if I wasn't there to drive you when you died. As I was trying to figure out the logistics and explain to you that you'll just know how to get there when it happens, you suddenly gasped and shouted "I know!! The Wonder Pets will help me get there! They always help people who need to get somewhere!" I smiled and said, "yes, you're right. The Wonder Pets will help you get there." Conversation over.
But then, as if the topic needed more exploration, it was around that same time that Grammie's 18 year-old cat Magnolia started looking pretty bad. The day before Grammie had to take her to the vet to be put to sleep, you got to say good-bye to her and you told her that she was a really great kitty. You seemed to understand the circumstances and although you pointed out to Grammie a couple days later that she was "all alone now," you offered up one of the most compassionate gifts I've ever seen. You had just gotten a little orange, stuffed animal kitty who you named Magnolia Kitty Stephens. The night after you got her, you spent the night at Grammie's and brought her with you. When Grammie crawled into bed with you that night she noticed a lump under the covers, looked down and saw that you had tucked your Magnolia in right where Grammie's Magnolia used to sleep. When you left the next day you insisted that Grammie keep Magnolia Kitty Stephens for a while so she wouldn't be sad.
Why? Because you're sweet! And kind and smart and loving. You're also active. And enthusiastic, friendly, stubborn, curious, strong-willed, passionate and funny. Did I say active? You can hardly sit still, except when watching your favorite show or movie on TV, which happens to be The Smurfs at the moment. Hmmm. Maybe you'll love vintage like me?
You and your brother are quite the pair these days. Now that he can do so much more you two can really play together. Not to say that fighting doesn't happen pretty frequently also. But every time you open your mouth to show Miller something, he absolutely beams at you and hangs on to every word. He loves you. Your daddy and I see it all the time. It's obvious that you still get really jealous of him because you don't like to share our attention, but I think it's starting to get a little better. The other day you got to go to Terra Toys to spend a gift certificate you got from your Aunt Lauren for your birthday. When we took the basket to the counter I realized you had picked out more things for Miller than you did for yourself! I'll remind you of this generosity and love later on, I'm sure.
What else are you up to? You are about to get a brand new room once Daddy moves to his outside office and you're super excited. You are terrified of getting splinters and you love picking up roly polys. You are spending less time dressing up and more time on the swing and playing outside. You want to know how everything works and you'll tell me while I'm driving when I'm pushing the gas pedal and when I'm pushing the brake pedal. When we go shopping you want to buy everything. You seem to like ballet but told me today that you wanted to quit because you hate having to wear your hair in a ponytail. We'll see what happens with that.
I promise to write more often so we don't forget these special moments and days. You still tell me every day that you love me "to the moon and back" and I tell you "I love you to the moon and back a million, billion times." You are a real challenge sometimes but you are already growing into a person Daddy and I are so very proud of.
Love you so much! xoxoxo

under construction
Gary's office is under construction! It was started last Monday and is supposed to be finished by the end of this week. That timeline sounds a little ambitious to me, but I'm hoping they're right.
As a bit of an afterthought we also decided to landscape the side yard since our brick patio was sinking in spots and we were sick to death of Lola tracking in mud every time it rained. Hooray! We'll keep you posted with this week's progress.
